During the storm:
* Bring pets indoors well in advance of a
storm
* During the hurricane watch period keep tabs
on local
reports, double check your pet’s
emergency supplies and
have evacuation vehicles fueled
and ready to go
* Pets that are released or left behind often
become
victims of starvation, predators or accidents
After the
storm:
* Walk pets on a leash until they become
re-oriented to
their home. Familiar scents
and landmarks may be
altered causing them to
be confused and lost
* After a disaster animals can become
aggressive
or defensive—monitor their behavior
* Provide shade along with water for your
pets.
* Pets that are stressed sometimes avoid
food, so be sure
to monitor their
appetite
* If pets cannot be found after a disaster,
contact the
local animal control office and/or
shelter
